Most of us want to be green, be kinder to the environment and create less of a carbon footprint. We are aiming in our holiday cottage to provide you with a lovely holiday while at the same time doing as much as we can to be environmentally friendly. Below is a brief description of some of the things we have done with this aim in mind.
Energy
The cottage is heated by a boiler that can run on logs, sawdust pellets or waste animal feed, and the wood burning stove is just that! Wood is 100% sustainable and carbon neutral. We are growing our own willow coppice to use for wood in the future. Our hot water and electricity are provided in the main by solar panels and photovoltaic cells. The cottage is very well insulated and has double glazing to keep the heat in and to avoid drafts.
Recycling
You will see we have provided you with a compost bin and that there recycling facilities for glass and paper. There are re-usable shopping bags in the hall. We provide recycled and environmentally friendly products such as loo rolls , cleaning materials etc. The cottage itself was contructed with many recycled products for example the internal doors were made from old pitch pine.
Outside
We have created a wildlife area and wetland habitat to encourage different animals and birds. The small pond is full of toads and frogs in the spring followed by frog spawn and tadpoles as well as many other aquatic species including dragon flies. We harvest rain water from our dutch barn and pipe it to various points in the garden for watering our plants. We also compost our food and garden waste and cardboard. What do you think? We would love to know if you support our green initiatives and also if you have any ideas of other things we could do to promote sustainability.
